Our Family's Latest Game - In a Pickle

We just bought this game last weekend. Our 6 and 8 year old even played, with help. The things I like about the game are:

  • It requires that the players read or sound out the cards.
  • We can learn about common and proper nouns.
  • It teaches vocabulary to the younger kids.
  • It uses creative thinking skills.
  • It can get silly.
  • You can use the 300 word cards to play other games like Charades or Apples to Apples (just make up your own adjective cards)
  • You can also use the word cards to do noun or writing activities.
  • It was only $15 at Wal-Mart.
The official description of the game:

In a Pickle
™ The What's in a Word Game
Can a giraffe fit in a phone booth? Does a sofa fit in a shopping cart? It all depends on how you size it up in this game of creative thinking and outrageous scenarios. Try to win a set of cards by fitting smaller things into bigger things - There's some juice in a pickle, in a supermarket, in a parking lot. Play the fourth word card to claim the set, unless one of your opponents can trump with a larger word. The player with the most sets at the end is the BIG winner!

We love games like In a Pickle that get the creative juices flowing. This is a great game to break out when you need to stretch your brain. See how outrageous you can get with the scenarios you create. At the same time, challenge yourself (and your opponents) to think outside the norm and picture scenes that might otherwise seem preposterous. The more you play, the more you will see that there’s more inside a word than you might expect!

2-6 players, ages 10 and up.

Very fun. We love games like that (Perpetual Notion and Scategories are favorites around here.)
